Spice
garden: Since time immemorial, this emerald isle has remained popular for its
exotic spices, the world over. To those who bear interest in these rich
elements that stirred the interests of many nations, the spice gardens located
in Kandy, Matale and Mawanella offer wonderful opportunities to view these
spices up-close. The gardens are not only delightful spots for a stroll midst
the fragrant greenery but also offer interesting perspectives into the local
spices, as the visitors are educated on the diverse variety of spices available
in the country as well as on how they are grown and processed.
Batik factory: Where you can see the manufacture of beautiful Batik
prints and purchase a wide variety of Batik items.
Kandy: Often
referred to as the hill capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy offers a diverse variety of
experiences to its visitors ranging from history, culture and simple scenic
beauty coupled with a touch of urbanity. It was the last Sinhalese Kingdom that
fell under British rule in 1815. The journey to this mellow weathered city can
be quite enjoyable, particularly by train owing to the scenic delights that lie
alongside. The city’s colonial architecture has been preserved well even in the
backdrop of rapid urbanization. Close to the city’s center is the prime
landmark - Sri Dalada Maligawa that houses the sacred tooth relic of Buddha.
Apart from the ancient monuments of the Kandyan era, the delightful jumble of
antique shops and the bustling market in the city also make up for interesting
places to visit.

Tea
Plantations: Tea was first planted in Sri Lanka in 1824 at
the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, when a few plants were brought from
China. More were introduced from Assam in 1839. In 1867, a Scottish planter
named James Taylor planted tea seedlings in 8 hectares of forestland in the
Loolecondera Estate. In 1873, the tea export industry of Sri Lanka began with a
modest 23 lbs. being shipped to London. Today more than 200,000 hectares in
highlands and other areas are under tea and around 300 million kilograms (nearly
25% of world tea exports) are exported by Sri Lanka as the world’s second-largest
tea exporter. Tea grows only on rolling terrain and is classified by elevation
into Low Grown.
Nuwara
Eliya: The ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, is set against beautiful backdrops
of mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and tea plantations and is 6,200 feet above
sea level. In 1826 some British Officers out on shooting, chanced on Nuwara
Eliya plains, and Sir Edward Barnes investigated on it. In 1828 a road was
constructed over the ridge at Ramboda Pass and a station for convalescent
soldiers was established. It was Sir Samuel Baker who fell under the spell of
Nuwara Eliya, brought hounds, horses, cattle, sheep etc. and started a typical
English farm here. Flowers and vegetables were brought from England and
planted. It is supposed to be one of the coldest places on the Island but is
just like an England spring day although the temperature does drop at night.

rival the savannah reserves of Africa, the Udawalawe National Park is a
treasure of this emerald isle. Nourished by the Udawala reservoir, the park is
located between the Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, stretching over 30,000
hectares. It is most popular for elephant sightings as the verdure shelters
close to 500 jumbos. The riches within the park do not end there; flocks of
sambar deer, wild buffaloes, bandicoots, foxes, water-monitor lizards,
crocodiles, sloth bears, the occasional leopards and a wealth of reptiles and
birds can also be observed in their natural habitats. Birdwatching and camping
arrangements are available.

Turtles Hatchery: The Ahungalla turtle hatchery in the
Southern province was one of the earliest attempts to safeguard local turtles
from extinction. Managed by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Protection Society, the
Ahangama hatchery offers a wildlife experience of a different sort. Its
visitors are offered the opportunity to watch new-born turtles as well as some
rare species of adult turtles including Olive Ridley, the Hawksbill, the Green
Turtle, the Loggerhead and the Leatherback, swimming about the massive tanks as
they beat their flippers against the water.
A picturesque
boat trip on the ‘Madhu Ganga’ river: The primitive lifestyle of the inhabitant of the island of the Madu
River is only a boat ride away. The boat ride takes us through the thick
mangroves and abundant bird life, to reveal the primitive style of fishing and
prawn trapping still practiced by the inhabitants of the islands.

fine dining and shopping, not to mention the overarching beauty of the city’s
rapidly developing landscape, a perfect combination of well-preserved colonial
architecture and urbanity. Meanwhile, if you are free to spend a few days in
