What immediately struck me was how accessible the zoo is. Surrounded by the busy streets of Kumasi, stepping through the entrance felt like entering a quieter, greener space away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The shaded pathways and mature trees made it a pleasant place to explore, even during the warmer parts of the day.

As I made my way around the zoo, I encountered a wide range of animals, including monkeys, crocodiles, antelope, birds and reptiles. It was interesting to see species that are native to Ghana alongside animals from other parts of Africa. The variety meant there was always something new to discover around each corner.

One of the highlights of the visit was watching the primates. Their playful behaviour and constant movement made them fascinating to observe, and they quickly became a favourite among many of the visitors. I found myself spending longer than expected simply watching them interact with one another.

The zoo also provided an opportunity to learn more about wildlife conservation. Information displayed throughout the site helped explain the importance of protecting animal habitats and preserving species for future generations. It added an educational element to the visit and gave greater context to the animals on display.

What I enjoyed most was the relaxed atmosphere. There was no pressure to rush from one enclosure to the next. Instead, visitors could take their time, enjoy the surroundings and appreciate the opportunity to see animals that they might never encounter in the wild.

Although it is very different from visiting a national park such as Mole National Park, Kumasi Zoo offers its own unique experience. It provides an accessible introduction to Ghana’s wildlife and is particularly well suited to families, school groups and travellers who may not have the time to venture further afield.

By the end of my visit, I was glad I had included it in my itinerary. It offered an enjoyable mix of wildlife, education and history, all within easy reach of the city centre.

For anyone spending time in Kumasi, Kumasi Zoo is worth a visit. Whether you are interested in animals, conservation or simply looking for a peaceful break from the city’s busy streets, it provides an enjoyable and informative day out.
