I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’d seen countless wildlife documentaries on television, but the idea of seeing animals roaming freely in their natural habitat felt completely different. Looking back, it was one of the most memorable experiences of my trip to Ghana.

Our day started early as we met our guide and headed out into the park. Almost immediately, it became clear that this wasn’t like visiting a zoo or wildlife park. There were no fences separating us from the animals, just open landscapes stretching into the distance and the excitement of not knowing what we might discover next.

As we made our way through the park, our guide pointed out different species that I would have completely missed on my own. We spotted antelope grazing peacefully, families of warthogs wandering through the grass and several troops of baboons going about their day. Every few minutes there seemed to be something new to see, which made the whole experience feel like a real adventure.

The highlight of the safari came when we saw elephants in the wild for the very first time. Watching them move so calmly through the landscape was incredible. They seemed completely unbothered by our presence, quietly feeding and interacting with one another. Seeing such magnificent animals outside of an enclosure was something I’ll never forget.

What surprised me most was how peaceful the experience was. Rather than racing from one animal to the next, the safari encouraged us to slow down and appreciate everything around us. The sounds of birds, the rustling trees and the vast open scenery were just as memorable as the wildlife itself.

One of the things I appreciated most was how knowledgeable our guide was. They didn’t just help us spot animals, they explained their behaviour, the park’s conservation efforts and the importance of protecting Ghana’s wildlife for future generations. It made the experience feel educational as well as exciting.

By the time we returned, I realised a safari isn’t just about ticking animals off a list. It’s about experiencing nature in its purest form and appreciating the incredible ecosystems that exist beyond our everyday lives.

My first safari at Mole National Park exceeded every expectation I had. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or someone who’s never considered going on a safari before, I’d highly recommend it. It’s one of those experiences that stays with you long after you’ve left, and it’s a fantastic reminder of just how beautiful the natural world can be.
