Historical Sinop Prison

Sinop Prison, located within Sinop Castle, was known as the Alcatraz of Anatolia until it closed in 1999. It has been known that the Sinop Castle was built in the 7th century BC to protect the city against invasions. Then, until 1560, it was used, renewed, and strengthened by the Romans, Seljuks, and Ottomans. The inner castle’s bastions were first converted into prisons in 1560, and in 1887 the inner castle was totally converted. Many Turkish writers, journalists, and officials have been imprisoned here throughout its history. It was also the setting for Turkish TV shows and films; Eskiya Dunyaya Hukumdar Olmaz, Pardon, Kopek, Parmakliklar Ardinda, Esir Sehrin Gozyaslari, and Tatar Ramazan.
