As a British visitor, I was eager to learn more about Ghana’s history, and Cape Coast Castle offered an opportunity to do exactly that. The castle was originally built by European traders in the 17th century and changed hands several times before becoming a British colonial fort. Today, it serves as a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors from around the world.


Our guided tour began in the courtyard, where our guide explained the castle’s long history and its role as a major trading post along the West African coast. The fortress was used for many purposes over the centuries, but it is most widely known for its involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.


Walking through the castle was both fascinating and sobering. The guide’s knowledge brought the site to life, explaining how different parts of the castle were used and how thousands of people passed through its walls over hundreds of years. Every room seemed to reveal another layer of history.


One of the most memorable parts of the tour was descending into the underground dungeons. The contrast between the bright coastal sunshine outside and the dark stone chambers below was striking. Standing in these spaces and hearing the stories connected to them provided a powerful insight into a period of history that shaped countries and communities across several continents.


Another significant moment was visiting the “Door of No Return,” the final exit through which captives were taken from the castle before boarding ships bound for the Americas. Looking out across the ocean from this point gave a real sense of the castle’s geographical importance and its connection to global history.


Beyond the historical aspects, I was impressed by how well the site is preserved and presented. The museum exhibits, information boards and guided tours help visitors understand not only what happened at Cape Coast Castle but also the wider historical context. The guides were passionate, knowledgeable and willing to answer questions, making the experience both educational and engaging.


The castle’s location also adds to the experience. Situated in the heart of Cape Coast, it offers stunning views of the Atlantic and provides an interesting contrast between the beauty of the coastline and the weight of the history contained within the fortress walls.


Visiting Cape Coast Castle was one of the most memorable experiences of my trip to Ghana. It is a place that encourages reflection, learning and understanding. Whether you’re interested in history, culture or simply gaining a deeper appreciation of Ghana’s heritage, it is a destination that should not be missed.
