I’d seen plenty of photos beforehand, but nothing quite compares to experiencing it for yourself.
After arriving at the park, we made our way through the forest with a guide, learning a little about the wildlife and the importance of protecting one of Ghana’s most beautiful natural environments. Even before reaching the canopy walkway, the rainforest was impressive, with towering trees, the sounds of birds and insects, and a real sense of being surrounded by nature.
Then came the main event. Climbing the steps to the first platform, I could feel the anticipation building. The canopy walkway is made up of a series of suspension bridges stretching high above the forest floor, connecting the tops of giant trees and offering a completely different perspective of the rainforest.
Stepping onto the first bridge was definitely a moment to remember. It swayed gently beneath my feet, and although I was a little nervous at first, that feeling quickly disappeared as I focused on the incredible views around me. Looking out across the endless canopy of trees was something I’ll never forget.
As I crossed each bridge, I became more confident and found myself stopping to take in the scenery. The rainforest stretched as far as I could see, and from high above the ground it felt incredibly peaceful. It was one of those experiences that makes you slow down and appreciate the natural world.
What I enjoyed most was that the canopy walk is exciting without being overwhelming. You don’t have to be an adrenaline junkie to enjoy it. There’s just enough of a thrill to make it memorable, while still giving you plenty of time to admire the surroundings and enjoy the experience at your own pace.
Once back on solid ground, I couldn’t stop talking about it. It was one of those activities that pushes you just outside your comfort zone in the best possible way, leaving you with a real sense of achievement and some unforgettable views.
If you’re planning a trip to Ghana, I’d highly recommend adding Kakum National Park to your itinerary. The canopy walk offers a unique way to experience the rainforest, combining beautiful scenery, a touch of adventure and memories that will stay with you long after you’ve left the forest behind.
