La Costa, or Coastal Plain, is located on the Pacific Ocean and has a tropical climate. To the east is La Amazonia, or the Amazon, consisting of tropical rainforest, and on the well-known coast of Ecuador are the renowned Galapagos Islands, which are the house of the Charles Darwin Research Station. The country was once populated by the Inca civilization, and much of its culture can still be seen. Ecuador's Historic Andean Capital, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Quito, Cuenca to see the rich Spanish and Indian elements, and Cotopaxi and Cajas National Parks to experience the wildlife can be visited.
