Ethiopia Gondar Tours

Fasil Ghebbi, the Royal Enclosure

Fasil Ghebbi, Gondar's Royal Enclosure, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Within its stone walls stand six castles and a series of palace buildings raised by successive emperors between the 1630s and 1660s, blending Aksumite, Nubian, Portuguese Baroque and local building styles in a way found nowhere else in Ethiopia. Fasilides' Castle, the oldest and largest, anchors the compound, with the later addition of Iyasu I's palace known for its carved ceilings.

Debre Berhan Selassie

Debre Berhan Selassie church sits on the edge of the old city and is known for a ceiling covered in rows of painted angel faces, one of the most photographed pieces of religious art in Ethiopia. Local tradition credits swarms of bees with helping save the church from the Dervish raids that destroyed much of Gondar in 1888.

Fasilides' Bath and Timkat

Outside the main enclosure, Fasilides' Bath is a stone pavilion built over a walled pool that once served as a royal retreat and is still filled with water once a year for Timkat, the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany. Each January, worshippers gather at the bath for a reenactment of Christ's baptism, one of Gondar's largest annual events.

Empress Mentewab's Kuskuam Complex

On a hill on the edge of the city, the Kuskuam complex was built in the mid-18th century as a residence and church for Empress Mentewab, one of the most powerful figures in Gondarine history and regent to her young son, Emperor Iyasu II. The site combines a ruined palace with an active church decorated with religious murals, and its hilltop position gives clear views back over Gondar and the Royal Enclosure below.

Gateway to the Simien Mountains

Gondar serves as the standard starting point for trips into Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO-listed range roughly two to three hours to the northeast known for jagged peaks, deep escarpments and wildlife including the gelada, a grass-grazing primate found only in the Ethiopian highlands. Multi-day treks and shorter park visits both typically begin with a night in Gondar.

Best Time to Visit Gondar

The dry season from October to May brings the clearest conditions for exploring both the Royal Enclosure and the Simien Mountains, with October and November also offering green landscapes left over from the rains. Trekking in the Simiens is possible year round, though the wet season from June to September makes trails muddier and views less reliable.
