The Tegalalang Rice Terraces

North of the center, the stepped green paddies of Tegalalang are Ubud's best-known view, best reached early before the tour buses arrive. A short walk further, the Campuhan Ridge trail follows a grassy spine between two rivers for an hour or two of easy hiking.

Cooking Classes and the Cooler Highlands

Sitting higher than the coast, Ubud stays noticeably cooler in the evenings, which suits its many cooking schools teaching Balinese staples like lawar and sate lilit over a wood fire. Traditional dance performances, often Legong or Kecak, run most evenings around the royal palace at the town's center. The lotus pond behind Saraswati Temple, just off the main street, is a quiet spot to sit out the midday heat.
