About Adana Misis Mosaic Museum
Misis
Mosaic Museum
showcases remarkable artifacts uncovered during excavations at the Misis
Tumulus, the most prominent of which are the exquisite mosaics that once
decorated the floor of a 4th-century temple in the ancient city of Misis.
Established in 1959, the museum is located in Yakapınar village at the eastern
edge of Adana, on the west bank of the Ceyhan River.
Visitors can
explore different historical periods in chronological order, with one of the
museum’s highlights being the floor mosaics of a basilica situated within the
boundaries of ancient Misis, displayed in situ for an authentic
experience. At the center of the mosaic composition stands a table-shaped
chicken coop surrounded by 23 birds and fowl—representing the species that Noah
is said to have taken onto his ark. Behind this scene, a variety of wild and
domestic animals are depicted in fine detail. The mosaic dates back to the 4th
century.
The museum’s
collection has grown significantly over the years. Artifacts and mosaics
previously held at the Adana Archaeological Museum during the Misis Mound
excavations have been transferred back, and architectural elements found
throughout the region have been gathered to further enrich the exhibition.
