About Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar Literature Museum Library

AHMET HAMDİ TANPINAR MUSEUM

The Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar Literature Museum Library, established by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on 12 November 2011, is located in the Alay Pavilion (Alay Köşkü), which stands atop a corner tower of the walls surrounding Topkapı Palace, to the left of the entrance to Gülhane Park, in Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula. In Türkiye, where thematic libraries are relatively limited, the institution holds special importance as it functions both as a public library and a museum.

The museum sheds light on the history of Turkish literature, housing books, life stories, and personal belongings of significant authors. Its archive section includes letters, notes, and previously unknown photographs written in the authors’ own handwriting, offering valuable insights into literary history.

The Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar Literature Museum is situated within Gülhane Park, one of Istanbul’s historic sites, inside the Alay Pavilion. In the 17th century, Ottoman sultans watched ceremonial processions organized to demonstrate the power of the empire from this pavilion. During the early years of the Republic, the building served as the headquarters of the Fine Arts Union. Today, the pavilion’s walls display manuscripts and handwritten notes by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar and many other writers, exhibited in small frames.

The library section of the museum houses works of great importance to Turkish literary history. Located on the first floor, the library contains approximately 9,000 books by more than 1,000 authors. After visiting the museum section, visitors may use a designated area for studying or reading.

On the second floor, works and personal belongings of major representatives of post-1950 Turkish literature, including Yahya Kemal Beyatlı, Necip Fazıl Kısakürek, Orhan Pamuk, and Nâzım Hikmet, are exhibited. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.

Following the literature museums established in Ankara, Adana, and Diyarbakır, the Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar Literature Museum is the fourth institution of its kind in Türkiye. Furthermore, the Tanpınar Literature Research and Application Center, founded on 12 December 2017, operates within the museum under the auspices of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, with Handan İnci serving as its founding director.
