Çeşme Museum

The Çeşme Museum is a general-interest museum located in the Çeşme district of İzmir Province, Turkey.

The museum is situated within Çeşme Castle. The Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Paşa Monument stands directly in front of the museum, while the Aegean Sea coastline lies approximately 60 metres (200 feet) to the west.

History

Çeşme Castle was commissioned by Sultan Bayezid II of the Ottoman Empire in 1502. In 1965, the building was converted into a weapons museum. However, due to high humidity levels that caused corrosion on the metal parts of the weapons, the collection was later transferred to other museums.

In 1984, the museum was reorganized and reopened as a general-purpose museum, expanding its scope to include archaeological and historical exhibits.

Exhibitions

The museum’s collections are displayed across several halls:

• One exhibition hall features artifacts from the Archaic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, including terracotta figurines, oil lamps, and pottery.
• Another hall is dedicated to finds from rescue excavations at Idırı (ancient Erythrae), showcasing terracotta figurines, silver and copper coins, and amphorae.
• A separate hall commemorates the Battle of Çeşme, an important 18th-century naval battle fought in the Bay of Çeşme. This section displays maps, posters, flags, medals, and artifacts recovered from the sunken Russian flagship.
