About this tour
Climb Mount Kilimanjaro on a 7-day Lemosho Route trek, travelling from the mountain’s western rainforest slopes to the open landscapes of the Shira Plateau. This high-altitude adventure takes you through changing mountain environments, from forest trails to rocky alpine terrain, with views of Kilimanjaro along the way.
Trek through the Barranco area with support from a local mountain team, following a steady pace as you gain altitude. The most demanding stage is summit night, when you make your final ascent toward Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After the summit attempt, descend along the mountain trails to complete your trek at the exit gate.
Designed for hikers with good fitness, this Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary requires preparation for long walking days and challenging altitude conditions. Reaching the summit depends on individual acclimatisation, weather and mountain conditions.

What makes this tour special
Itinerary
After breakfast, drive to Londorossi Gate for registration before continuing to the Lemosho trailhead, where your Kilimanjaro trek begins.
Walk through mountain rainforest surrounded by tall trees, dense vegetation and birdsong. The trail can be muddy and slippery after rain, so follow your guide at a steady pace.
Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, where your mountain team will prepare the campsite while you rest after your first day of trekking.
Habitat: Rainforest
Trekking distance: Approximately 6 km
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Starting altitude: 2,360 m
Camp altitude: 2,895 m
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and dinner
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Start early and leave the rainforest behind, ascending through giant heather, open moorland and rocky terrain toward the Shira Plateau. This longer stage of the Lemosho Route includes regular breaks for water, rest and lunch.
As the landscape opens up, enjoy sweeping views across the plateau and toward Kibo Peak when conditions are clear. Continue at a steady pace to Shira 2 Camp, where higher altitude brings thinner air and cooler temperatures. Settle in for dinner and rest after a demanding trekking day.
Habitat: Moorland
Trekking distance: Approximately 16 km
Walking time: Approximately 7–8 hours
Starting altitude: 2,895 m
Camp altitude: Approximately 3,850 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Depart Shira 2 Camp and cross the high alpine desert toward Lava Tower. Follow rocky, exposed trails at a steady pace, with time to take in Kilimanjaro’s stark mountain scenery. Keep warm layers and sun protection accessible as conditions can change quickly.
Stop for lunch near Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 m, before descending into the Barranco Valley. This stage follows a “climb high, sleep lower” profile to support acclimatisation, with your overnight camp below the day’s highest point.
Continue slowly to Barranco Camp, keeping your guides informed of any discomfort as you gain altitude. Enjoy dinner and rest at camp.
Habitat: Alpine desert
Trekking distance: Approximately 10 km
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Starting altitude: Approximately 3,850 m
Highest point: Approximately 4,630 m
Camp altitude: Approximately 3,960 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Barranco Camp
After breakfast, begin the ascent of the Barranco Wall, a distinctive stage of the Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route. Negotiate steep, rocky sections with careful footing and guidance from your mountain team. Some stretches involve scrambling, although technical climbing equipment is not normally required.
From the top, continue across ridges before descending into the Karanga Valley and making the final climb to Karanga Camp. This stage is shorter than the previous day, allowing time to rest, stay hydrated and prepare for the next part of your trek.
Habitat: Rocky mountain terrain
Trekking distance: Approximately 5 km
Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Starting altitude: Approximately 3,960 m
Camp altitude: Approximately 4,035 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Leave Karanga Camp and continue ascending across dry, rocky terrain toward Barafu Camp, your base for the Kilimanjaro summit attempt. Vegetation becomes sparse as you enter the high alpine desert, where exposed conditions can bring strong winds and cold temperatures.
On arrival, settle into camp and rest before checking your equipment and attending your guide’s summit briefing. Use the afternoon to prepare your clothing and essentials for the overnight ascent.
Enjoy an early dinner and try to sleep before the planned midnight departure. Rest and drink regularly as you prepare for the most demanding stage of the trek.
Habitat: High alpine desert
Trekking distance: Approximately 4 km
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Starting altitude: Approximately 4,035 m
Camp altitude: Approximately 4,673 m

Wake around midnight for tea and a light snack before beginning your summit attempt under headlamps. Climb slowly over steep terrain in cold conditions, following your mountain guides toward Stella Point on the crater rim.
If conditions and your guide’s assessment permit, continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, Africa’s highest point. Those who reach the summit can pause briefly for photographs before beginning the descent.
Descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for dinner and your overnight stay. This is the longest and most demanding day of the trek. Your guides may adjust the pace or route according to weather, mountain conditions and the group’s wellbeing.
