What makes this tour special
Itinerary
After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Moshi and transferred to Machame Gate. After completing registration and park entrance formalities, your Kilimanjaro adventure begins.
The trek starts through the lush rainforest, where you will walk beneath a canopy of tropical vegetation while gradually gaining altitude. The trail can be muddy and slippery in some sections, so good hiking boots are recommended.
After approximately 5–7 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Machame Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your campsite. Enjoy dinner and rest for the night.
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Overnight: Machame Camp
After breakfast, begin your trek from Machame Camp toward the Shira Plateau. The trail becomes steeper as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the beautiful moorland zone.
As you climb higher, the vegetation becomes shorter and the landscape opens up, offering spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and, weather permitting, Mount Meru in the distance.
Continue at a steady pace with your guide until you reach Shira Camp. Upon arrival, enjoy your meal, relax and take time to acclimatize to the increasing altitude.
Distance: Approximately 5–6 km
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Shira Camp
After breakfast, leave Shira Camp and begin trekking toward Lava Tower, one of the key acclimatization points on the Machame Route. The trail gradually climbs through the alpine landscape as you gain altitude.
You will reach approximately 4,630 meters at Lava Tower before beginning the descent toward Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep lower" approach gives your body an opportunity to adapt to the increasing altitude.
Continue through the spectacular Barranco Valley, where you will see giant senecio plants and dramatic volcanic scenery. Arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon, enjoy dinner and rest while preparing for the next day's climb.
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert / Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Barranco Camp
After breakfast, begin the day with the exciting ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. Although the wall looks challenging from below, your experienced guide will assist you through the steeper sections at a safe and comfortable pace.
Once you reach the top of the Barranco Wall, continue across a series of valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp. This is a shorter trekking day, giving you valuable time to rest, hydrate and prepare for the upcoming summit stages.
Enjoy the spectacular alpine scenery surrounding you before having dinner and resting at Karanga Camp.
Distance: Approximately 5–6 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Karanga Camp
After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp, the final high camp before your summit attempt.
The trail climbs gradually through the alpine desert, with spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding mountain landscape. Although today's hiking distance is relatively short, the increasing altitude makes it important to walk slowly and conserve your energy.
Arrive at Barafu Camp around midday or early afternoon. After lunch, you will have time to rest, hydrate and prepare your clothing and equipment for the summit attempt.
Your guide will provide a detailed briefing about the summit climb. You will have an early dinner and go to bed early because the summit ascent begins around midnight.
Distance: Approximately 4–5 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Wake around midnight and begin the most challenging and rewarding part of your Kilimanjaro adventure. After a light meal and final preparations, start the summit ascent under the stars with your experienced guide.
The trail climbs slowly and steadily toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The pace will be deliberately slow to help conserve energy and manage the altitude. Once you reach Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
At 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), you will reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Take time to celebrate your achievement, take photographs and enjoy the incredible summit experience, weather and conditions permitting.
After the summit, begin the descent toward Barafu Camp for a short rest and refreshment. You will then continue descending through the alpine desert toward Mweka Camp, where you will have dinner and rest after this long and memorable day.
Distance: Approximately 15–17 km
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert / Arctic
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Mweka Camp
After breakfast, begin your final descent from Mweka Camp through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate.
Enjoy the beautiful forest scenery as you gradually descend to lower altitude. Once you reach Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate if you successfully reached the required summit point.
Your Vilima Adventure Tours vehicle will meet you at the gate and transfer you back to Moshi. Upon arrival, you can relax at your hotel and celebrate the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
End of trek: Moshi
