8 Day Northern Greece Food & Culture Tour: Thessaloniki, Kavala & Philippi

After breakfast, meet your guide at the hotel’s reception & start walking through Thessaloniki’s history & culture. Meet locals and interact in the local fish & meet market, visit the newly renovated Modiano market and through the amazing seafront of Thessaloniki visit the famous White Tower, the landmark of the city. Spend a morning leisurely like the locals do while enjoying your coffee or even a local spirit like Tsipouro to a place among Thessalonikians! Taste a koulouri, one of the favorites of the locals and learn all about the history of the city through the ages.

After breakfast, meet your driver & assistant & head to the outskirts of Thessaloniki, the village of Lagadas.

To this traditional village live the experience of everyday lifestyle of a traditional Greek family and an authentic traditional Greek sweet meal with your friends. Live like a local, feel like your home, learn authentic recipes basedon the Mediterranean diet. You will taste and enjoy Greek coffee or hot mountain tea, some Greek meze snacks and traditional welcome drinks. You can familiarize with the animals of the farm. Learn all the secrets of Greek gastronomy!

Meet your guide & driver & head to Kavala, approximately 2h north of Thessaloniki. 

Visit the ancient city of Philippi in the prefecture of Kavala is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites one can visit. Once conquered by Macedonian King Phillip II, Alexander the Great's father, who gave the town his name, later became one of the most important Roman cities. This is where Paul, the Disciple of Christ, came to preach Christianity and created the first European Christian church. In the baptistry of Lydia we can see the place where the first European woman, Lydia, was baptized and where adult baptisms still take place to this day.

Of course, no visit to the area would be considered full without enjoying a beautiful walk around the city of Kavala, one of the most beautiful cities of northern Greece.  

Early afternoon, check in to your hotel in Kavala.

After breakfast, meet your driver/assistant at the hotel & head to the Forest of Elatia outside Drama city.

The legendary Cara Dere, is the biggest in size forest in Greece, around 700,000 acres of orchard vegetation on the Greek Bulgarian border, on the golden section of the pan-European and Mediterranean climate zone, with spruce (Picea abies) at its southern limit.

On site we will embark to our Jeep 4*4 and enjoy an off-road trip within the forest.

We will then enjoy our brunch at Stravorema spot with wine from Drama, local snacks and pies (one of the most beautiful places of the area) along with a local expert.

Early afternoon return to Kavala.

After breakfast, our day will be free to enjoy & explore the area of Kavala.

Optionally we can visit the nearby island of Thassos.

Taxi from the city of Kavala is approximately 30minutes to the port of Keramoti where you can pick the short boat ride to Thassos. Boats depart every hour during high season and the route is only 1h.
On arrival to Thassos, you can enjoy swim to crystal clear waters, taste local products or just explore the greenest island of Greece.

Depart Kavala after breakfast and after one hour reach Aggitis Gorge with its breathtaking views of 100m stip rocks along with your local assistant.

See the prehistoric rock frescos dated back to 2500BC and then proceed to Alistrati Cave one of the most beautiful of Europe.

After the visit to the cave, proceed to the winery where we will meet the owners, taste 3 labels of famous local wines accompanied by small bites.

Around 16.00 return back to the hotel.

After breakfast, transfer to Thessaloniki Airport for your flight home.
