Tour Overview
While the majority of historical sites are located on the European side of Istanbul, the Asian side still offers a lot to see and explore. Our tour will take you to some of the most prominent neighborhoods, including Uskudar, Kadikoy, and Kuzguncuk. In Kadikoy, you'll have the opportunity to visit popular local hangouts and enjoy a stroll through Kuzguncuk's streets, which have maintained their traditional style, providing a glimpse into what Istanbul was like in the 1990s. Additionally, one of the tour's highlights will be a walk along the Uskudar seafront. It's an alternative tour of Istanbul that shouldn't be missed.
Highlights
- Eminonu, Kadikoy, Kuzguncuk, Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, Moda, Sureyya Opera House, Uskudar
Itinerary
The journey begins in Eminonu, where we board a local ferry to Kadikoy on the Asian side of Istanbul. As we sail across the Bosphorus, we can admire the stunning skyline of the old city, with its iconic landmarks such as the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia Museum, and Topkapi Palace.
Kadikoy, a bustling neighborhood, is second only to Istiklal Avenue in Taksim in terms of liveliness. It's a must-visit destination with its charming cafes, restaurants, vibrant fish and fruit markets, shops, and antique stores. The area is home to a 1920s Sureyya Opera House located on Bahariye Avenue, one of Istanbul's most modern shopping streets. As we wander through these vibrant streets, we'll come across several Armenian and Greek churches. For a relaxing break and some homemade Turkish ice cream, head to Moda, a tranquil neighborhood.
Uskudar, on the other hand, is a conservative neighborhood on the Asian side.. There are historic Ottoman mosques to explore, including the one built for Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The local market in Uskudar is located in the heart of the square, selling fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, dried fruits and nuts, Turkish Delight, and more.
The stroll from Uskudar to the multiethnic fishing village of Kuzguncuk is a pleasant walk along the shore and through the parks, where people can enjoy the sea breeze and indulge in amateur fishing. Kuzguncuk, situated off the beaten path on the Asian side, has a history of Greek, Jewish, and Armenian minorities. Finally, we return to the European side on a local ferry, concluding our tour.
