A story of rivalry between two brothers, Sigiriya’s towering 200-meter rock was designed to protect King Kashyapa from his brother, King Mogallana, who had rightful claims to the throne.

Over 130 species of birds can be found here, including crested serpent eagles, white-bellied sea eagles, and a variety of waterfowl. Day 11: Udawalawe National Park

 

Early in the Morning – Transfer Tissamahrama to Udawalawe Before visit Bundala national bird park transfer to Udawalawe, one of the greatest and most important protected areas in Sri Lanka. Known for its remarkable biodiversity, the park serves as a crucial habitat for Sri Lankan elephants and a variety of water birds. In the Morning or afternoon, embark on a game drive through Udawalawe National Park. The park is renowned for its large population of Sri Lankan elephants, which roam freely in the park’s natural environment. You will also have the chance to see a variety of other wildlife, including water buffalo, crocodiles, and a wide array of bird species.

Visit to the Elephant Transit Home Once you arrive, head to the Elephant Transit Home, an essential conservation center dedicated to caring for orphaned or injured baby elephants. Founded in 1995, the home has rehabilitated many elephants, providing them with the care and nutrition they need until they are strong enough to return to the wild. You will be able to observe a group of around 20 to 30 juvenile elephants being fed four times a day. Feeding time 10:30 am, 2:30 pm, and 6:00 pm. The Elephant Transit Home plays a crucial role in rehabilitating elephants that have been separated from their herds due to human-wildlife conflict or other reasons. Since its inception, many elephants have been successfully reintroduced to their natural habitats, where they continue to live freely.

Morning or Noon – Watch the Baby Elephants Being Fed at noon, watch as the baby elephants are fed milk. It’s a heartwarming experience to witness these young pachyderms being cared for and preparing to be reintroduced to the wild once they are strong enough. Day 12: Unawatuna Beach

 

Morning – Transfer to Mirissa

After a delicious breakfast, depart for Mirissa, a coastal town known for its whale and dolphin sightings. The journey will take approximately 5 hours, offering scenic views of Sri Lanka's beautiful southern coastline. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and take some time to settle in.

Next, head to Weligama, famous for its traditional stilt fishermen. This unique fishing method involves fishermen balancing on a single pole planted into the sea-bed, with lines cast into the waters to catch small fish. Stilt fishing, a tradition that began after World War II, is now mainly practiced in a few coastal towns like Koggala, Kaththaluwa, and Ahangama.

Witness the fishermen's skill and balance as they fish from their perched poles. This fascinating sight is especially beautiful at dawn, noon, and dusk, when the fishermen are in action. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about this traditional method, which has seen a resurgence in recent years after the 2004 tsunami.

After the stilt fishing experience, return to the beach for some relaxation. Enjoy a refreshing sea bath in the turquoise waters of Mirissa Beach, famous for its calm waters and picturesque scenery. You may also choose to relax on the beach and soak in the beauty of your surroundings.

As you explore the fort, you will be able to appreciate its blend of European architecture and South Asian traditions, a feature that earned it its UNESCO World Heritage status.

Following your visit to Galle Fort, stop by a Spices Garden to learn about Sri Lanka's rich tradition in spice cultivation and its importance to the island's culture and economy.

Next, head to Meetiyagoda, a small town known for its moonstone mines. This semi-precious gemstone, used in jewelry for thousands of years, is particularly associated with the moon's mystical qualities. The mine is an important site for moonstone extraction, and you’ll have the chance to observe the mining process and shop for these stunning gemstones.

Continue your day with a visit to Ambalangoda, renowned for its mask-making tradition. The Ambalangoda Mask Factory and Museum offers a fascinating insight into the centuries-old art of Sri Lankan mask-making.
