Sigiriya UNESCO Heritage Site

Pidurangala Rock, followed by a village tour. The history of Sigiriya is a tale
of rivalry and tragedy between two brothers. King Kashyapa built the great rock
fortress of Sigiriya to protect himself from his brother, King Mogallana.
Kashyapa seized power by force, fearing Mogallana would return to reclaim his
rightful throne. To safeguard himself, he constructed the rock fortress with
advanced technology for its time. Despite Kashaya’s efforts, Mogallana
eventually defeated him, leading to the fortress's destruction. Originally,
Sigiriya served as a Buddhist monastery. After the palace was destroyed, it
reverted to its monastic roots. Europeans discovered Sigiriya in 1831 when
British Army Major Jonathan Forbes stumbled upon it on his way from
Polonnaruwa. Subsequent excavations by historians and archaeologists unveiled
the full glory of this remarkable site.
Pidurangala is a large rock located a few kilometers north of Sigiriya. The two rocks share an intertwined history: while King Kashyapa was constructing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the 5th century, he relocated the monks living around Sigiriya to a new monastery on Pidurangala Rock. Today, Pidurangala offers glorious vistas of the surrounding landscape and an incredible view of the majestic Sigiriya Rock. The ancient cave temple at Pidurangala houses artifacts reflecting Buddhist, Hindu, and Western influences, and the stupa near the temple entrance is believed to mark the spot where King Kashyapa was cremated. The temple's five caves house 157 statues of Lord Buddha, along with numerous intricate paintings on the ceilings and walls, showcasing the artistic talent of ancient times. The history of these caves, the rock, and the temple dates back to the 1st century BC.
