Many facades have been restored over the past three decades under a long-running conservation program, while others down side streets still show the wear of the tropical climate.

The Malecon and Havana's Classic Cars

The Malecon, an eight-kilometer seawall and promenade, runs along Havana's northern edge from Old Havana to the newer Vedado district, and functions as a gathering place at all hours, particularly around sunset. American cars from the 1950s, kept running for decades through improvised repairs after a long-standing trade embargo cut off new imports and parts, remain a common sight on Havana's streets and are frequently used for organized city tours in open-top convertibles.

November through April falls outside the Caribbean hurricane season and brings drier, more comfortable weather for walking the old town and sitting along the Malecon. The summer months are hot and humid with a higher chance of tropical storms, though Havana's colonial buildings and museums remain open year-round regardless of season.
