A Compact Country for Overland Travel
Nothing in El Salvador is far away. San Salvador to the Pacific surf beaches takes under an hour, Santa Ana volcano is about ninety minutes out, and the whole Ruta de las Flores can be driven in an afternoon with stops for coffee and pupusas along the way.
What Most El Salvador Tours Include
Itineraries tend to combine a volcano hike with time on the coast and at least one colonial town. Travel between the stops rarely takes more than a couple of hours.
- Santa Ana volcano and its turquoise crater lake
- Lake Coatepeque for swimming and lakeside lunches
- Suchitoto's cobbled streets and indigo workshops
- El Tunco and El Zonte on the surf coast
When to Travel
The dry season from November to April is the most reliable window, while the green months bring afternoon rains that usually clear by evening. Surf swells peak between March and October.
