A Sea Fortress Just Offshore

Suomenlinna, a UNESCO-listed fortress spread across several small islands, sits a short ferry ride from the market square and makes for an easy half-day of walking among its bastions, tunnels and small museums. Ferries also run out to other parts of the archipelago in summer, when Helsinki's long daylight hours stretch well past ten at night.

Sauna as a Way of Life

Public saunas like Loyly and Allas Sea Pool have turned an old daily ritual into something visitors can try firsthand, often followed by a cold plunge in the Baltic regardless of season. Winters run short on daylight but the city compensates with a busy indoor scene of design shops, museums and cafes clustered around the compact center.
