Rovaniemi was rebuilt after 1944 to a street plan by Alvar Aalto that traces the outline of a reindeer head, and the modern town still centers on his Lappia Hall and library. Most Lapland tours start from Rovaniemi thanks to an airport ten minutes away and direct trains from Helsinki, including the overnight Santa Claus Express.

Beyond Santa Claus Village

Save time for the Arktikum museum, whose glass tunnel points at the northern sky and explains Arctic life and science, and for Ounasvaara hill across the river, which has ski slopes in winter and marked walking trails in summer. Ranua wildlife park, about an hour south, keeps polar bears and other Arctic species.

Choosing a Season

December is the busiest and priciest month. January to March offer deeper snow, longer days and lower prices, while September brings autumn colors and early auroras without the crowds.
