Guwahati is Assam's largest city, built along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River in India's northeast. Guwahati Tours use the city as a base for temple visits, river excursions and onward trips into the surrounding hill states, since Guwahati holds the region's main airport and rail connections.
Most itineraries pair Guwahati with a longer India journey through the northeast, treating the city as an entry and exit point rather than a final destination. Even a short stay covers the Brahmaputra waterfront, the hilltop temple above the city and a market or two in the older parts of town.
Kamakhya Temple
Kamakhya Temple stands on Nilachal Hill overlooking Guwahati and ranks among the most important Shakti Peethas in Hindu tantric tradition, sites believed to mark where parts of the goddess Sati fell to earth. The temple's beehive-shaped shikhara and its annual Ambubachi Mela, a festival drawing tantric practitioners and pilgrims from across India, make it one of the northeast's most visited religious sites.
The Brahmaputra Riverfront
The Brahmaputra runs nearly a kilometer wide as it passes Guwahati, and sunset boat trips along the river are a standard part of most visits. Cruises typically pass Umananda Island, home to a Shiva temple and said to be one of the smallest inhabited river islands in the world, before returning to the ghats as the sun sets over the water.
Gateway to the Northeast
Guwahati functions as the main transit hub for India's northeastern states, with road and air connections reaching Meghalaya's hill towns, Arunachal Pradesh's mountain valleys and the wildlife parks of upper Assam. Many travelers spend a night or two in the city before continuing on to Kaziranga National Park or the Khasi and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya.
Assam State Museum and the Old Town
The Assam State Museum in the city center holds a collection of stone sculpture, tribal artifacts and manuscripts documenting the cultures of Assam and the wider northeastern states, a useful stop for travelers heading onward into areas with fewer formal museums. Guwahati's older neighborhoods around Fancy Bazaar and Pan Bazaar retain a river-trade character shaped by centuries as a crossing point on the Brahmaputra, with narrow lanes still lined by spice traders and tea merchants.
Assam produces roughly half of India's tea, and much of the crop passes through Guwahati's auction houses on its way to market, giving the city an economic role that extends well beyond tourism.
Guwahati Tour Packages
Guwahati Tour Packages generally combine the city's temples and riverfront with excursions further into the region, since few visitors treat Guwahati as a standalone stop. Northeast India Monastic & Kaziranga Wildlife Tour links the city with monasteries and wildlife destinations elsewhere in the northeast.
Best Time to Visit Guwahati
October through April brings drier weather and clearer conditions for river trips and temple visits, with the Ambubachi Mela in June drawing large crowds to Kamakhya despite falling within the wetter months. The monsoon, roughly May through September, raises the Brahmaputra considerably and can affect river excursions.
