Mandya is a district town in southern Karnataka, roughly midway between Bengaluru and Mysore, set among sugarcane fields fed by the Cauvery River. Its main draw for visitors is the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam just outside town, along with the historic fortress town of Srirangapatna a short drive away.
Tours through Mandya are typically brief stops within a wider India route through Karnataka, rather than standalone multi-day trips.
Krishna Raja Sagara Dam and Brindavan Gardens
The Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, completed in 1932 across the Cauvery River, was one of the larger reservoir projects in India at the time of its construction and remains a key source of irrigation for the sugarcane fields surrounding Mandya. Below the dam, Brindavan Gardens is laid out in terraces with fountains choreographed to music and colored lighting after dark, a feature that has made it one of the more visited garden sites in the state. The gardens also include stepped lawns and pathways that follow the slope down from the dam wall, giving visitors a clear view of the reservoir above before descending toward the fountain terraces.
Srirangapatna
About 20 kilometers from Mandya, Srirangapatna sits on an island in the Cauvery River and was the capital of Tipu Sultan's kingdom until 1799, when British and allied forces took the fort in a siege that ended his rule. The town holds Tipu's fort, his summer palace known as the Daria Daulat Bagh, and the Ranganathaswamy Temple, a Vishnu shrine that gives the island its name and predates the fort by several centuries. A memorial marks the spot near the fort's water gate where Tipu Sultan is believed to have fallen during the final siege, and his tomb, the Gumbaz, stands a short distance outside the fort walls.
Sugarcane Country
Mandya district is one of Karnataka's principal sugarcane-growing regions, a status that earned it the local nickname the Sugar City, and cooperative sugar mills established in the mid-20th century remain part of the local economy alongside tourism tied to the dam and gardens. The Cauvery's irrigation network, fed by the Krishna Raja Sagara reservoir, underpins both the farmland visitors pass through on the drive from Bengaluru and the town's broader economic base.
Best Time to Visit Mandya
The cooler months from October to February are the most comfortable for visiting the dam and gardens, with lower humidity than the summer months preceding the monsoon. Brindavan Gardens' evening fountain show runs as a fixed daily draw regardless of season.
