North India Culture Tour from Delhi
Udaipur Tours center on Rajasthan's so-called City of Lakes, a former Mewar kingdom capital built around the artificial waters of Lake Pichola. White-walled palaces, marble temples and a hillside setting give Udaipur a softer character than the desert forts further north in Rajasthan, and its lakes remain the organizing feature of almost everything visitors do here.
Most itineraries route Udaipur as part of a longer India journey through Rajasthan, typically following Jodhpur or Jaipur before continuing on toward Mumbai or Delhi. A city tour generally covers the City Palace complex, a boat ride on Lake Pichola and a walk through the old town's bazaars.
City Palace
The City Palace stands on the eastern bank of Lake Pichola and ranks among the largest palace complexes in Rajasthan, built up over nearly four centuries by successive Mewar rulers beginning in the mid-16th century. Courtyards, balconies and towers link a series of smaller palaces within the complex, several now converted into museum galleries displaying miniature paintings, royal costumes and weaponry. Upper terraces give sweeping views across the lake toward the Aravalli hills. One inner courtyard, Mor Chowk, is decorated with elaborate glass and mosaic peacocks set into the walls, among the palace's most photographed interior features.
Lake Pichola and the Lake Palace
Lake Pichola is an artificial lake expanded under Mewar rule from the 16th century onward to supply and reflect the city's palaces. At its center sits the Lake Palace, known formally as Jag Niwas, a white marble palace built on its own island in the 18th century and now operated as a hotel accessible only by boat. A second island on the lake holds Jag Mandir, a garden palace begun in the early 17th century that later gave shelter to the Mughal prince Khurram, the future emperor Shah Jahan, during a revolt against his father. Evening boat rides across the lake are among the most requested experiences on an Udaipur tour, timed to catch the City Palace and surrounding ghats lit by the setting sun.
Jagdish Temple and the Old City Bazaars
The Jagdish Temple, an Indo-Aryan style temple carved with intricate stone reliefs, stands close to the City Palace gates and anchors the old town's market lanes. The bazaars below the temple sell miniature paintings, textiles, silver jewelry and Rajasthani handicrafts, and are typically explored on foot as part of a half-day walking segment.
Saheliyon Ki Bari and Fateh Sagar Lake
North of the old city, Saheliyon Ki Bari, the Garden of the Maidens, was laid out in the early 18th century under Maharana Sangram Singh II around a series of fountains, lotus pools and marble elephant sculptures. Nearby, Fateh Sagar Lake forms a second artificial lake distinct from Pichola, its boat rides typically taking in a small island garden at its center and views back toward the Aravalli hills that frame the city.
Rajasthani Cuisine in Udaipur
Restaurants around the old city and lakefront commonly serve Rajasthani staples such as dal baati churma and gatte ki sabzi, dishes rooted in the region's historically arid, grain and lentil-based diet, often paired with rooftop dining that takes advantage of views over Lake Pichola. Udaipur's domestic airport and rail connections link the city to Jaipur, Delhi and Mumbai, making it a practical hub for a wider Rajasthan circuit.
Udaipur Tour Packages
Udaipur features prominently in longer Rajasthan circuits that combine the state's major forts, palaces and desert cities into a single route. The 6 Day Royal Rajasthan Heritage Tour By Car With Driver is one such itinerary, moving travelers between Udaipur and neighboring Rajasthan cities by private car with a driver.
Private Tours in Udaipur
Private touring suits Udaipur particularly well given the closely spaced sights around the lake and old city. A private guide and vehicle allow visitors to time the City Palace visit for quieter hours, adjust the boat ride to sunset and add stops such as the Saheliyon Ki Bari gardens or the Monsoon Palace on the hill above the city without following a fixed group schedule.
Best Time to Visit Udaipur
October through March brings the most comfortable weather for sightseeing in Udaipur, with cooler evenings well suited to the popular sunset boat rides on Lake Pichola. Summer months from April through June bring high, dry heat typical of Rajasthan, while the monsoon season from July through September raises lake levels but also humidity.
