About Ancient Sites Of Batman

Hasankeyf Ancient City
Located along the banks of the Tigris River, Hasankeyf is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world, with a history spanning over 12,000 years. The site has hosted numerous civilizations including the Romans, Byzantines, Artuqids, Ayyubids, and Ottomans. Notable monuments include the Hasankeyf Castle, Zeynel Bey Tomb, rock-cut dwellings, bridges, and mosques. Despite partial submersion following the Ilısu Dam project, Hasankeyf remains a powerful symbol of Mesopotamian heritage.

Hasankeyf Castle
Rising above the ancient city, Hasankeyf Castle was strategically built to control the Tigris Valley. The fortress incorporates Roman foundations and medieval Islamic architectural elements, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Mor Kiryakus Monastery
Located near the village of Ayrancı, Mor Kiryakus Monastery is one of the oldest Syriac Christian monasteries in the region, dating back to the 4th century. The monastery reflects the deep-rooted Christian heritage of Upper Mesopotamia.

Malabadi Bridge
Situated on the Batman–Diyarbakır route, Malabadi Bridge was constructed in 1147 during the Artuqid period. Renowned for having one of the largest stone arches in the medieval world, the bridge stands as a masterpiece of Islamic engineering and architecture.

Kozluk (Hazo) Castle
Located in the Kozluk district, this fortress has origins dating back to antiquity and was later strengthened during Roman and medieval periods. The castle played a key role in regional defense and trade route control.

Hallan Çemi Mound
Hallan Çemi Höyük is a significant Neolithic archaeological site, dating back to around 10,000 BCE. Excavations reveal early hunter-gatherer communities and represent a crucial stage in the transition to settled life in Upper Mesopotamia.

Gre Fılla and Other Archaeological Mounds
Batman province is rich in prehistoric settlement mounds such as Gre Fılla, reflecting long-term human occupation from prehistoric to historical periods.

Cultural Landscape of the Tigris Basin
The archaeological heritage of Batman is deeply connected to the Tigris Basin, where ancient settlements, bridges, religious monuments, and trade routes collectively illustrate the cultural richness of Mesopotamia.
Batman’s ancient sites offer visitors a journey through prehistoric, classical, and Islamic civilizations, making the province a key destination for cultural and archaeological tourism in southeastern Türkiye.
