About Ankara Middle East Technical University
Established
in 2003 in Ankara, the METU Science and Technology Museum is an institution
affiliated with Middle East Technical University. The museum aims to document
the technological developments that have taken place in Anatolia since 7000 BCE
and to showcase contemporary technologies. Work on the museum began in 2001 and
was completed in 2005.
Located
within the university campus, the museum complex consists of four main
sections. These include the exhibition building known as the “Great Silo,” which
presents the evolution of science and technology from past to present; the “Hangar,” which houses
the Transportation History exhibition; the “UFO,” a hands-on science center
featuring more than 50 interactive experiments; and an open-air exhibition area.
The open-air section displays locomotives, a C-47 aircraft, an F-104 jet, and
other vehicles and machinery collected with contributions from various
university units and partner institutions.
In October
2003, former Prime Minister Bülent
Ecevit donated his historic Erika typewriter—which he had used
for nearly 70 years since his primary school years—to the METU Science and
Technology Museum, expressing his feelings with the following words:
“I
am proud to donate my typewriter to a scientific institution such as METU.”
