About Batman Museum & MuseumPark
Batman Museum & MuseumPark – A Journey Through Mesopotamia’s Ancient
Heritage
As one of the region’s most significant cultural
institutions, Batman Museum offers visitors a comprehensive look into
the archaeological richness of Upper Mesopotamia. The museum features three
main exhibition halls—Paleolithic–Neolithic, Ilısu, and
Hasankeyf—showcasing nearly 500 artifacts that span from the Paleolithic
Age to the Middle Ages.
Batman Museum also serves as the headquarters for seven
major rescue excavations carried out in the mounds (höyüks) of Batman
and Siirt, which were affected by the rising waters of the Ilısu Dam.
These excavations have revealed some of the most remarkable archaeological
discoveries in recent years
Highlights of the Collection
The museum preserves several iconic and scientifically
significant artifacts:
• Başur Höyük Game
Pieces
Considered one of the world’s earliest known game sets,
these pieces shed light on symbolic and ritualistic traditions of Bronze Age
societies.
• “Standing Stone” from
Gusir Höyük
An impressive example of early ritual architecture from
the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period.
• Bronze Grave Goods
from Başur Höyük
Objects discovered in rich funerary contexts that reveal
details about social hierarchy and elite burials.
• “God Bes” Figurine
from Hasankeyf
An important artifact reflecting the spiritual and
artistic life of ancient Hasankeyf.

MuseumPark
Developed by the Batman Museum Directorate, MuseumPark
is Turkey’s first open-air interactive archaeological learning area. Designed
to bring history to life, the project recreates ancient environments and daily
life scenes based on real excavation data.
MuseumPark Features:
- Reconstructed Neolithic houses from Gusir and Gre
Amer Höyüks
- Funerary practices seen in Başur, Gre Amer, and
Kuriki mounds
- Replica of the Başur Höyük Game Pieces
- The Artuqid Gate of Hasankeyf
- Medieval Hasankeyf Living Area
- Traditional village life scenes from the near past
Interactive Learning Areas
MuseumPark includes hands-on archaeological training
fields designed for students from primary school to high school. Under the
guidance of expert archaeologists, students can:
- Learn excavation methods
- Experience simulated digs
- Watch educational short films
- Explore interactive simulation zones designed for children
This innovative approach makes MuseumPark an educational
hub for both local and international visitors, transforming archaeology into an
engaging and accessible experience.
