About Denizli Ataturk Ethnography Museum

Atatürk House Ethnography Museum – Denizli

Although the exact construction date of the building is unknown, available information indicates that it was built in the late 19th century. With its exterior architecture, floor plan, window forms, and ornamental details, the house reflects the characteristics of the Sakız (Chios) architectural style. The two-storey structure features a central hall (sofa) with rooms opening onto it, a typical layout of traditional houses from the region.

In the early years of the Republic, the building served as a party headquarters, and on 4 February 1931, it hosted Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk for one night during his visit to Denizli. After the 1950s, the house was allocated to the Ministry of Health and used as a Tuberculosis Dispensary for a period.

In 1977, the Ministry of Culture registered the building as a monumental structure, placing it under state protection. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Atatürk’s birth, the building underwent restoration and exhibition planning between 1981 and 1983, and it was opened to visitors as a museum on 1 February 1984. Following deterioration over time, it was restored once more, and the renewed exhibition was inaugurated on 4 February 1999.

Museum Layout

  • Ground Floor:
Exhibits of ethnographic artifacts reflecting Denizli’s local culture and traditional lifestyle.
  • Upper Floor:
Two rooms house personal items related to Atatürk, while the remaining rooms have been arranged to represent the original form of the traditional residence.

The Historic Standard (Sancak)

One of the museum’s most remarkable pieces is a ceremonial standard (sancak) made of red satin, richly embroidered with gold thread.

  • The front side features the Ottoman inscription “Long Live the Homeland”, the Ottoman Imperial Coat of Arms within a wreath, and three star-and-crescent motifs.
  • The lower inscription reads:
“A souvenir of Regiment 67, Battalion 2, 24th draft, presented at Un Bazaar and Baş Mosque in Denizli Market.”
  • The reverse bears Arabic script and star-and-crescent motifs in the upper corners.
  • The edges are adorned with metallic fringes.
  • It is dated 1327 AH / 1811 AD.

This standard holds significant historical value: during the protest rally against the Greek occupation of İzmir, Mufti Ahmet Hulusi Efendi delivered his famous speech beneath this banner, calling upon the people of Denizli to join the national struggle.
