About Eskişehir Meerschaum Museum

Meerschaum Museum – Eskişehir

Odunpazarı | Türkiye

The Meerschaum Museum is located within the Urban Conservation Area of Eskişehir’s Odunpazarı district. The foundation of the museum dates back to 1998, when works exhibited at the International Meerschaum Festivals, Meerschaum Handicrafts Competitions, and exhibitions organized by the Eskişehir Governorship were purchased by the Provincial Administration. These acquisitions marked the first step toward establishing a dedicated museum for meerschaum art.

Housing approximately 400 works created by 60 artists, the Meerschaum Museum was officially opened to visitors in 2008 by Odunpazarı Municipality within the historic Kurşunlu Complex, welcoming both local and international guests.

Meerschaum: The Symbol of Eskişehir

White meerschaum, extracted exclusively in the Eskişehir region, has become the city’s most iconic natural resource. Locally known as the “Eskişehir Stone,” meerschaum is also internationally referred to as “Sea Foam,” “Meerschaum,” “Magnesite,” and “Sepiolite.”

Chemically composed as MgSiO·2HO (hydrated magnesium silicate), meerschaum is found at depths of up to 150 meters underground. When freshly extracted, it is soft and easy to carve; once dried in sunlight or exposed to heat, it hardens, allowing finely detailed and permanent forms to be created.

A Local Legend: “Respect for the Mole”

According to local folklore, the discovery of meerschaum is attributed to a mole. Legend tells of a young man who noticed a mole pushing a white stone out of its underground tunnel. When the young man picked up and began carving the stone, it cried out in pain and transformed before his eyes, ultimately disappearing back into the earth. The tale serves as a symbolic reminder of respect for nature and the hidden treasures beneath the land.

Meerschaum Craftsmanship

Meerschaum is best known for its use in crafting meerschaum tobacco pipes, prized worldwide for their artistry and functionality. Its soft texture during extraction enables intricate carving, while its later hardening preserves the sculpted form. Eskişehir’s meerschaum deposits are considered among the richest and deepest in the world.

The Museum Collection

The artifacts displayed in the museum were collected during International Meerschaum Festivals, handicraft competitions, and exhibitions held in Eskişehir since 1998. Today, the Meerschaum Museum stands as a unique institution—the only museum of its kind in the world—dedicated entirely to the history, craftsmanship, and cultural significance of Eskişehir’s most distinctive natural treasure.
