About İnönü Military Quarter and War Museum
Eskişehir | Türkiye
This historic building served as the military
headquarters from which the Battles of İnönü, one of the decisive turning
points of the Turkish War of Independence, were planned and commanded.
Following the occupation of Anatolia at the end of World War I, Greek
forces—seeking to seize Western Anatolia and Thrace—were halted and ultimately
repelled after suffering two consecutive defeats in these hard-fought battles.
The operations of the Western Front were directed from
this headquarters by Commander İsmet İnönü, whose leadership played a crucial
role in stopping the advancing enemy and safeguarding the route to Ankara,
despite the fact that hostile forces had already reached as far as Eskişehir.
The selection of this location as headquarters by
Brigadier General İsmet İnönü was a strategic decision. It provided a strong
defensive position against the Greek forces advancing from two directions, as
well as against the armed bands of Çerkes Ethem, who were also engaging Turkish
troops at the time. From here, İnönü successfully disrupted the enemy’s plans
and prevented a direct advance toward Ankara.
In recognition of Commander İsmet İnönü and in
commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the İnönü victories, the building was restored
between 2000 and 2001 by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Türkiye.
Following this restoration, it was opened to the public as the İnönü War
Museum, preserving its historical legacy for future generations.
