About Namık Kemal House Museum

Namık Kemal House Museum

Tekirdağ is closely associated with Namık Kemal, one of the most prominent writers of the First Tanzimat Period of Ottoman literature and remembered as the “Poet of the Homeland.” Although his family was originally from Istanbul, Namık Kemal was born in 1840 in Tekirdağ.

Near the site of his birthplace, a museum house was built in his memory. Designed in the style of old Tekirdağ houses, the project was realized through the joint efforts of the Tekirdağ National Education Foundation, Provincial Special Administration, Tekirdağ Municipality, the Namık Kemal Association, and other organizations. The memorial house was officially opened to the public in 1994.

Architecture and Layout

The Namık Kemal House Museum, built in accordance with the architectural style of 19th-century Ottoman houses, is surrounded by a spacious garden.

· Basement Floor: Arranged as an exhibition hall.

· Ground Floor: Marble-floored and decorated with portraits of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Namık Kemal, display cabinets, and oil paintings of Namık Kemal’s tomb and Francis II Rákóczi, the Hungarian prince who lived in Tekirdağ. The garden also features a viewing area and an open-air stage for cultural events.

Exhibitions

The wooden house, which has six rooms, contains rich displays:

· Corridor Panels: Photographs of Namık Kemal’s family, documents, old Tekirdağ photographs, and press clippings.

· Ethnographic Sections: Exhibits of Tekirdağ household culture, including the main room (başoda), kitchen, and bedroom furnished with traditional items.

· Literary Collection: Works written by Namık Kemal and books written about him are also on display.

This combination of ethnography and literature gives visitors both a cultural and historical perspective of Tekirdağ in the 19th century.

A Quote from Namık Kemal

One of his most famous lines from his play “Vatan Yahut Silistre” (Homeland or Silistra) is proudly displayed in the museum:

“I was naked,
It was the homeland that clothed me.”

The Namık Kemal House Museum in Tekirdağ is not just a memorial, but a cultural center that preserves the memory of Turkey’s “Poet of the Homeland” and the values he championed.
