About PTT Stamp Museum
Established by the Turkish Post and
Telegraph Organization (PTT), the PTT Stamp Museum opened its doors in October
2013. It is recognized as Türkiye’s first and only dedicated stamp museum,
offering visitors an in-depth look at the history of PTT, the production and
use of stamps, and the evolution of philatelic collections.
The museum’s rich collection includes
4,404 original Turkish stamps and approximately 1,500 stamps from various
countries around the world, bringing the total to nearly 6,000 items. In 2024,
the museum welcomed more than 100,000 visitors.
Museum Building
Located in Ulus, the museum occupies a
building designed by Clemens Holzmeister, the Austrian architect responsible
for many iconic public buildings of the early Republic period. Completed in
1934, the structure is a five-storey Neo-Classical building with a total usable
area of 6,500 m².
The building initially served as the
headquarters of Emlak ve Eytam Bankası. After remaining vacant for many years,
it was acquired and restored by PTT before opening as a museum in 2013.
Exhibition Layout
The museum spans five levels, including
the basement and ground floor, each dedicated to a different aspect of postal
and stamp history.
Basement Floor
This level features the Children’s Club
and a gallery dedicated to children-themed stamps, offering an engaging space
for younger visitors.
Ground Floor
The main entrance level presents historical
uniforms worn by postal employees throughout different periods and provides a
comprehensive introduction to the history of the PTT organization. A 3D cinema,
café, and gift shop are also located on this floor.
First Floor
This floor houses Turkish stamp
collections displayed in chronological order, beginning with the first Turkish
stamp—printed in 1863 at the Imperial Mint and bearing the tughra of Sultan
Abdülaziz. Collections from the Ottoman era, War of Independence, and
Republican period are presented here.
Second Floor
Organized into seven thematic sections,
this level showcases stamps classified according to their subjects and themes.
Third Floor
The top floor exhibits stamps from 189
member countries of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), offering a global
perspective on world philately.
