About Samsun Atatürk Museum
Samsun Atatürk Museum
The Samsun
Atatürk Museum, located in the historic Mıntıka Palas building,
holds a special place in Turkey’s national memory as the site where Mustafa
Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, stayed during his
landmark visits to Samsun.
Historical Background
- First Stay (May 19–25, 1919): Atatürk arrived in Samsun on May
19, 1919, a date that marked the beginning of the Turkish War of
Independence. He stayed for six days in this very building, then known
as Mıntıka Palas.
- Gift of the People: On Atatürk’s second visit
(September 20–24, 1924), the people of Samsun gifted the building to
him as a token of gratitude and admiration.
- Later Visits: Atatürk again resided here
during his third visit (September 16–18, 1928) and fourth visit
(November 22–26, 1930).
Architecture
The museum
building is a two-story structure with:
- Brick masonry outer walls
- Timberwork interior partitions
The
combination of brick and timber reflects early 20th-century regional
architecture and gives the building both durability and character.
Transformation into a Museum
After being
transferred from Samsun Municipality to the Ministry of Culture,
the building underwent restoration. It was reopened as the Samsun Atatürk
Museum on August 11, 1998, showcasing Atatürk’s personal legacy.
Exhibitions and Highlights
The museum
displays a collection of Atatürk’s personal belongings and historical
artifacts, including:
- Souvenirs and items used by
Atatürk
- Wax statues of Atatürk and his close
comrades-in-arms, crafted by the renowned Turkish sculptor Yılmaz
Büyükerşen
- Photographs and documents reflecting his visits to
Samsun and the early stages of the War of Independence
Cultural Importance
The Samsun
Atatürk Museum is not just a building—it is a living memory of the birthplace
of modern Turkey’s independence movement. It offers visitors a chance to
step into the same rooms where Atatürk stayed and to connect with the spirit of
May 19, 1919, a date celebrated annually as Atatürk, Youth and Sports
Day.
Visiting this museum allows travelers to walk in Atatürk’s footsteps and witness the early history of the Turkish Republic.
