About TCDD Open-Air Steam Locomotive Museum – Ankara

The TCDD Open-Air Steam Locomotive Museum was an outdoor railway museum located in the Maltepe district of Ankara’s Çankaya municipality. It occupied part of the land adjacent to Celâl Bayar Boulevard, right next to Ankara Railway Station. Established and operated by the Turkish State Railways (TCDD), the museum showcased the history of steam locomotives in Türkiye and formed one section of the broader Ankara Railway Museum, which also includes the TCDD Railway Museum and Art Gallery.

Relocation of the Museum

Opened in 1991, the museum displayed an extensive selection of historic steam locomotives. However, on 5 December 2013, all locomotives were relocated due to construction works for the High-Speed Train (YHT) and Başkentray projects at the Ankara Station site. The collection was moved collectively to the TCDD Behiç Bey Facilities, positioned beside the sports field and facing the silos of the Turkish Grain Board (TMO).

Today, part of the steam locomotive collection is exhibited in the garden of the METU Science and Technology Museum, where visitors can continue to explore the legacy of Türkiye’s railway heritage.
