Vienna sits barely an hour away by train or river boat, making Bratislava one half of the closest pair of capital cities anywhere, and day-trippers from Austria are a regular presence in the old town. The compact center, entered through the medieval Michael's Gate, is easy to cover on foot in an afternoon.

A Bridge With a View

The UFO observation deck, mounted atop a pylon of the SNP Bridge, gives a wide view back over the castle hill and the Danube, an odd but effective piece of socialist-era engineering turned tourist lookout. Devin Castle, a ruined fortress where the Danube meets the Morava river just outside the city, makes an easy half-day addition.
