The High Tatras

Slovakia's share of the Tatra range rises sharply above the plains near Poprad, with resort towns like Strbske Pleso serving as a base for both summer hiking and winter skiing. Jagged granite peaks here reach over 2,600 meters, modest by Alpine standards but dramatic for how abruptly they rise.

A Castle Complex and Wooden Churches

Spis Castle ranks among the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, its ruined walls visible for miles across the surrounding hills. Scattered through the eastern countryside, a set of wooden churches, built without nails in a mix of Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox traditions, carries its own UNESCO listing.

Caves Beneath the Karst

The limestone Slovak Karst region, shared with Hungary, hides an extensive network of caves, some open for guided tours with ice formations or underground rivers. It is an easy addition for travelers already spending time in the country's eastern half.
