It was a fortification building, surrounded by 6 powerful fortress bastions and a deep moat; a political prison; a monument of history and culture of Russia; a favorite vacation spot for citizens of different eras. The center of the Cathedral square of the Peter and Paul Fortress is its eponymous Cathedral-the oldest Church in St. Petersburg. During the reign of Peter 1 Peter and Paul Cathedral became the burial place for the Romanov dynasty — Russian emperors and empresses from Peter I to Nicholas II are buried there.
