Tour Overview
Travel back in time on this fascinating day trip in Eastern Georgia, exploring ancient cave cities and the old capital of the Georgian kingdom.
Discover the remarkable cave town of Uplistsikhe, meaning “Lord’s Fortress.” Founded in the Late Bronze Age (around 1000 BC), this extraordinary rock-hewn settlement was continuously inhabited until the 13th century AD. Between the 6th century BC and the 11th century AD, Uplistsikhe served as one of the most important political and religious centers of pre-Christian Kartli, one of the early Georgian states.
Continue to Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Eastern Georgia from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD. This sacred city is where Christianity was declared the official religion of Georgia in 337 AD. Today, Mtskheta remains the spiritual heart of the country and the headquarters of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Its “Historical Monuments” were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
This tour is perfect for travelers interested in history, archaeology, religion, and Georgian culture.
