Highlights
Itinerary
Welcome to a land where East meets West—between
crescent and cross!
Not long ago, Albania was an undiscovered gem, its
borders closed to the world. Today, it invites you with open arms to experience
a land rich in cultural heritage and renowned for the warmth of its people.
Upon arrival
at Tirana International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your friendly tour guide
and transferred in comfort to your hotel. After check-in and time to freshen
up, we’ll embark on our first exploration of Albania’s vibrant capital.
Tirana is a
city of contrasts—wide boulevards and spacious parks stand alongside oversized
communist-era buildings, while colorful facades breathe new life into once gray
streetscapes. The transformation began after the fall of communism, when an
inspired mayor painted drab buildings in bright, cheerful hues—a symbol of a
new, hopeful Albania.
Our guided
tour takes us to Skanderbeg Square, the city’s heart, named after the
15th-century national hero who famously resisted the Ottoman advance into the
Balkans. Nearby, we’ll see Tirana’s key landmarks: the Town Hall, National
Theater, and government district.
We’ll delve
into Albania’s unique religious harmony with visits to the elegant Et’hem
Bey Mosque, an Ottoman-era masterpiece, and the striking modern Orthodox
Cathedral of the Resurrection of Jesus, exploring how Islam and
Christianity coexist in today’s Albania.
Although few
ancient buildings remain in Tirana, the National History Museum offers a
fascinating introduction to the country’s turbulent past and enduring spirit.
In the
evening, enjoy a warm welcome dinner at a traditional Albanian restaurant,
sampling local flavors and dishes that tell their own stories of heritage and
hospitality. Overnight: Tirana
(Breakfast included)
Today, we journey from Albania to
North Macedonia, crossing the border into a land of ancient lakes and spiritual
heritage. Our first destination is the mesmerizing Lake Ohrid, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site since 1978. Together with its charming namesake town, this
lake is among the oldest in the world—dating back over five million years—and
boasts a unique ecosystem, crystal-clear waters, and an abundance of fish,
making it a true paradise for nature lovers and fishing enthusiasts.
Our day begins
in Ohrid,
a modern lakeside resort town with deep historical roots. Once a significant
Christian learning center, Ohrid is renowned for its churches, monasteries, and
timeless beauty. We visit the Cathedral
of St. Kliment, built in honor of the scholar St. Kliment, a
disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius—the inventors of the Cyrillic alphabet.
Set against a breathtaking backdrop of lake and mountains, the cathedral’s
presence is both monumental and serene.
Next, we
ascend to Samuil’s
Fortress, which has been carefully reconstructed. From its
mighty walls, enjoy panoramic views over Lake Ohrid and the surrounding
mountain ranges—a perfect spot for photos and quiet reflection. As we return
down to the old town, stroll through Ohrid’s narrow, cobbled streets, lined
with traditional houses and artisan shops.
In the
afternoon, we explore the Monastery
of St. Naum, an important center of Slavic and Orthodox
history. Founded by Saint Naum, another disciple of Cyril and Methodius, this
sacred site once housed the famed Ohrid
Literary School, where some of the earliest Cyrillic
manuscripts were created. Inside the monastery church, admire centuries-old
frescoes and carvings, and learn about the relics of St. Naum, still believed
to hold healing powers—especially for mental ailments. Even during the Ottoman
era, the monastery retained a special status for its spiritual importance.
For those
seeking a unique experience, we offer an optional boat trip on Lake Ohrid,
allowing you to appreciate the lake’s tranquil beauty from the water—a must-do
for any visitor. Later, enjoy a leisurely dinner at a lakeside restaurant
featuring regional fish specialties, including the famous Ohrid trout, a delicacy
found only here.
As the day
winds down, we recommend watching the sunset from the Church of St. John at Kaneo,
perched dramatically on a cliff above the lake—an unforgettable sight. We end
the evening at a charming lakeside hotel, where we stay overnight. Overnight: Ohrid
(Breakfast included)
Today we venture to Skopje, the dynamic capital of North
Macedonia—a city where ancient heritage meets bold modernity.
Once devastated by a powerful earthquake in 1963, Skopje has risen with a new
identity. Many historical and cultural treasures were lost, yet countless
others have been lovingly restored. Today, the city surprises visitors with its
grand fountains, colonnades, and monumental statues, giving the impression of a vast open-air museum.
We begin in Macedonia Square, where
the towering statue of Alexander
the Great stands proudly, surrounded by vibrant city life.
Nearby, tributes to Saints
Cyril and Methodius and the Mother Teresa Memorial House await. Did you
know Mother Teresa was born in Skopje? Though her birthplace was destroyed in
the earthquake, this memorial—a blend of Macedonian and Indian styles adorned
with 700 peace doves—honors her enduring legacy.
Crossing the
medieval Stone Bridge,
which spans the Vardar
River, we transition from the city’s modern heart to its
Ottoman-influenced old quarter. Here, the Old Bazaar invites exploration with its
labyrinth of cobblestone streets, colorful stalls, and traditional artisan
workshops—an evocative reminder of Skopje’s rich Ottoman past.
We then ascend
to the Kale Fortress,
dating back to the 6th century Byzantine era. From its ancient walls, enjoy
breathtaking panoramic views of the city and surrounding hills.
After the city
tour, relax and savor a hearty Macedonian lunch in a traditional restaurant,
sampling local specialties such as tavče
gravče, ajvar,
and freshly baked bread.
Before
returning to Ohrid, we stop at the natural wonder of Matka Canyon. This
stunning gorge, with its emerald waters, dramatic cliffs, and hidden caves, is
one of Macedonia’s most treasured landscapes. It’s the perfect way to end a day
filled with cultural and natural beauty. Overnight:
Ohrid
(Breakfast included)
Today we leave North Macedonia behind and journey into northern Greece,
where ancient history, charming villages, and stunning landscapes await.
Our first stop
is near the cozy modern town of Bitola,
where we explore the ancient ruins of Heraclea
Lyncestis—once the capital of Upper Macedonia. This
archaeological site offers a glimpse into a bygone era with its remarkably
well-preserved mosaics
from the 4th–6th centuries AD. Marvel at intricate mosaic floors depicting
unique trees, birds, and animals, still vibrant after centuries. Wander through
the ruins of Roman baths,
colonnades, an amphitheater, and the remains of early Christian
basilicas and episcopal palaces—each stone whispering stories of a glorious
past.
Continuing
south, we arrive at the enchanting village of Nymfaio, just across the Greek border.
Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in Greece and even
Europe, Nymfaio captivates with its stone-built
mansions, cobblestone streets, and timeless atmosphere.
Recognized by UNESCO for its exceptional preservation of cultural heritage, the
village has retained its character, with all new buildings strictly following
traditional architecture. A leisurely walk through Nymfaio feels like stepping
back into a mystical age where every stone tells a story.
Our journey
continues to Kastoria,
the pearl of Northern Greece. This picturesque town, built amphitheatrically on
a narrow peninsula surrounded by Lake
Orestiada, is framed by the Grammo and Vitsi mountains. Stroll
along its tranquil lakeside promenade, where the serene waters reflect
Byzantine churches, traditional mansions, and the rugged mountain backdrop.
Here, you can also indulge in a delicious Greek lunch, savoring local flavors
in a lakeside taverna.
In the
evening, we reach Kozani,
nestled north of the scenic Aliakmon River valley. It’s the perfect gateway to
continue our exploration of Northern Greece’s hidden gems. Overnight: Kozani
(Breakfast included)
This morning, we journey to one
of Greece’s most breathtaking and spiritual destinations—Meteora. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
Meteora’s name literally means “suspended
in the air”—a fitting description for its astonishing monasteries
perched atop towering rock pillars.
As we
approach, the surreal landscape unfolds like a scene from a fairytale: colossal
sandstone cliffs rise dramatically from the plains, crowned with ancient
monastic sanctuaries that seem to float between earth and sky. These natural
fortresses provided refuge from raiders over centuries and became home to one
of the largest organized monastic communities in the Orthodox world—second only
to Mount Athos.
We’ll admire
sweeping panoramas of the cluster of monasteries before stepping inside the
serene Monastery of St.
Stephen, renowned for its beautiful frescoes, tranquil
courtyards, and welcoming nuns who continue centuries-old traditions. Here, the
sense of history and spirituality is palpable.
After our
visit, we return to Kozani
for some free time to relax, stroll the charming town center, or enjoy a coffee
in one of its cozy cafés.
For those
eager to continue their historical journey, we offer an optional afternoon excursion
to another UNESCO gem: Vergina.
Once the capital of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, Vergina is hailed as one of
the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Explore
the royal burial site where stunning treasures were unearthed, including the
tomb of Philip II,
father of Alexander the Great. Wander through the Iron Age hilltop cemetery
with nearly 300 tombs dating back to the 11th–9th centuries BC, and feel the
echoes of Macedonia’s glorious past where Alexander himself was crowned.
This day
perfectly balances natural wonders and ancient legacies—two of Greece’s
greatest gifts to the world. Overnight:
Kozani
(Breakfast included)
Today, we begin our journey back
to Albania, but not before exploring one of Greece’s hidden gems—the enchanting
Zagori region. Nestled amidst dramatic gorges and lush greenery,
the villages of Zagori transport visitors into a medieval fairytale with their
traditional stone houses, cobbled lanes, and graceful arch bridges.
Our first stop
is the charming village of Vitsa,
where time seems to stand still. As we wander through its narrow streets,
admire the exquisite architecture that has earned Zagori its reputation as one
of Greece’s most picturesque regions. Along the way, we’ll marvel at the Plakidas Bridge, a
delicate stone structure spanning the crystal-clear waters below—a perfect spot
for photos and reflection.
What makes
this region even more intriguing is its unique cultural heritage. Many of the
inhabitants here speak Aromanian,
an ancient and rare Romance language, adding to the sense of stepping into a
different world.
In the
afternoon, we cross the border back into Albania and arrive in Saranda, a lively
coastal town overlooking the Ionian Sea. The rest of the day is yours to relax:
take a leisurely stroll along the seaside promenade, enjoy a coffee with
stunning sea views, or simply unwind at your hotel. Overnight: Saranda
(Breakfast
included)
Our final day offers a perfect
blend of relaxation, history, and Mediterranean elegance. Begin the morning in Saranda, a jewel of the Albanian
Riviera. Here, you can unwind on pristine beaches where crystal-clear turquoise
waters meet snow-white sands, or explore the city’s cultural treasures. A visit
to the 16th-century Lekuresi Castle, perched high above Saranda, rewards you with
panoramic views of the coastline and across the Ionian Sea to Greece’s lush
green Corfu Island.
But for those
seeking a truly unforgettable finale, we offer an optional excursion to Corfu—just
a short ferry ride away. Known in Greek as Kerkyra,
this enchanting island captivates with its vibrant blend of Greek, Venetian,
and Ottoman influences. In spring, the air is fragrant with orange blossoms; in
summer, the olive groves shimmer under the Mediterranean sun.
Explore Corfu Old Town, a UNESCO
World Heritage site where narrow cobblestone streets open into sun-dappled
squares and aristocratic mansions. Stroll through Spianada Square—the
second largest in Europe—and along the elegant Liston Promenade, inspired by Paris’s Rue
de Rivoli. Visit St.
Spyridon Church, the spiritual heart of the island, and admire St. Michael and St. George Palace,
a symbol of Corfu’s storied past.
Every corner
of Corfu tells a tale of its rich heritage—400 years under Venetian rule,
layers of Greek and Ottoman culture, and the unmistakable charm of the Ionian
islands.
In the
evening, after this cultural odyssey, we return by ferry to Saranda, where you can
enjoy your final night soaking in the beauty of the Albanian Riviera. Overnight: Saranda
(Breakfast
included)
This morning, we bid farewell to
Saranda and continue our journey along the breathtaking Albanian Riviera,
where dramatic cliffs, sparkling seas, and timeless legends await.
Our first stop
is the ancient city of Butrint,
a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Albania’s most fascinating
archaeological treasures. According to legend, Aeneas—the Trojan hero—paused
here to offer a sacrifice to the gods after fleeing the burning city of Troy.
But when his wounded bull fled across the water and died on these shores, he
took it as a sign to found a new city. Centuries later, Benito Mussolini,
claiming descent from Aeneas, championed excavations here in hopes of proving
the legend true.
Butrint’s
ruins tell a far more expansive story: once a thriving Greek and Roman spa
town, it later flourished under Byzantine rule. As you explore its extensive
site, you’ll find remnants of grand theaters, Roman baths, basilicas, and
fortifications—testament to over 2,000 years of history.
Next, we
journey inland to Gjirokastra,
Albania’s “Stone City” and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005. Nestled on
a hillside beneath a mighty fortress, Gjirokastra enchants visitors with its
narrow cobbled streets and distinctive tower houses—masterpieces of Ottoman-era
architecture. It’s said the city earned its nickname “the Silver City” because
when it rains, the stone roofs glisten like silver in the soft light. During
our leisurely tour, we wander through the old bazaar, visit traditional Ottoman
homes, and feel history whispering from every stone.
By evening, we
arrive in Vlora,
the gateway where the Ionian
and Adriatic Seas meet. Here, surrounded by a fusion of coastal
beauty and maritime history, we settle in for the night—our last stop along the
Albanian Riviera.Overnight:
Vlora
(Breakfast included)
On our final day, we journey
deeper into Albania’s rich tapestry of history, culture, and timeless beauty.
Our first stop is the ancient city of Apollonia, once a bustling Greek port founded in the 6th
century BC under the patronage of Apollo. This former hub of trade and learning
was even cited by Aristotle as a prime example of oligarchic governance. Over
time, shifting landscapes transformed its seashore into marshlands, leaving
behind poignant ruins that whisper of a once-thriving colony now turned to stone.
As we explore the site, admire the remains of the amphitheater, temples, colonnades, and the Acropolis, before visiting the Archaeological Museum, which
houses exquisite finds from the area’s illustrious past.
Next, we
return to the UNESCO World
Heritage city of Berat, famously known as the “City of a
Thousand Windows.” From a distance, its hillside houses resemble swallows
clinging to the rocky slopes, their countless windows gazing out like watchful
eyes. Atop the city stands Berat
Castle (Kalaja), its ancient walls enclosing a living history
where families still reside. Inside the old quarter, wander crooked lanes lined
with churches, mosques,
and traditional Ottoman houses, each revealing a chapter of
Berat’s multicultural heritage.
We visit the Onufri Museum, housed in
St. Nicholas Cathedral, showcasing priceless icons by Albania’s most celebrated
painter, renowned for his vivid reds and masterful artistry.
Our cultural
journey continues to the serene Ardenica
Monastery, built on the remains of an ancient pagan temple.
Even today, the monastery bears traces of antiquity with its 15th-century
buildings incorporating ancient Greek stones and statues into their design. The
intimate frescoed chapel within the monastery is a true gem, offering a
peaceful retreat and a glimpse into Albania’s spiritual soul.
As the sun
sets, we return to Tirana
for our final evening in this remarkable country, where modern energy and
ancient traditions intertwine. Overnight:
Tirana
(Breakfast included)
As our unforgettable Balkan
journey draws to a close, enjoy a leisurely morning in Tirana. Take this time to stroll
through the city’s vibrant streets, sip a final Albanian coffee, and perhaps
pick up some souvenirs or gifts to remember your adventure.
Around midday, we transfer to Tirana International Airport for your return
flight.
You leave with not only keepsakes but also cherished memories—of ancient cities
and breathtaking landscapes, of warm hospitality and rich cultures that have
left their mark on your heart.
We hope your
journey has been as inspiring and enriching as the lands you’ve explored. And
as we part ways, know that Albania and its neighbors will always welcome you
back for more discoveries.
Safe travels—and until
next time!
