Tour Overview

Gordion, the former capital of the Phrygian Civilization, has a rich history that dates back to the end of the 12th century BC. The collapse of the Hittites led to the Phrygians settling in Gordion. In the 9th century BC, Gordion underwent a significant transformation and became a fortified city with massive walls and impressive buildings. The tumuli, ancient ruins, and historical artifacts found in Gordion have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. It's a fascinating destination to visit, particularly because of its association with King Midas from mythology, who was said to have the power to turn anything he touched into gold and had the ears of a donkey.

Itinerary

We'll pick you up from your hotel in Ankara between 8:30 am and 9:30 am. After a drive of about 1.5 hours, we'll arrive at the ancient site of Gordion (Yassihoyuk), the capital of the ancient Phrygian Kingdom, named after its founder, King Gordios. Here, you'll have the opportunity to explore the ruins of the city, including the city walls, the Royal Palace, and the Tomb of King Midas, which is the second-largest of its kind in Anatolia. Your guide will enlighten you about the story of King Midas, who had "donkey ears," and the  famous myth of the Gordion knot that Alexander the Great cut.

We'll also visit the Godrion Museum, where you'll see artifacts displayed in chronological order, showcasing characteristic examples from different periods, such as pots, pans, tools made of steel, and textile looms from the Antique Bronze Age and Pre-Phrygian Period that ended with King Midas. You'll also witness Greek ceramics from BC 6 – AD 4, materials from the Hellenistic Era and Roman times, seals, and coins.
