Kasubi Royal Tombs (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Visit the active burial grounds for the Kabakas (kings) of Buganda. This is one of Uganda's most significant cultural sites, featuring the magnificent main building, Muzibu Azaala Mpanga a massive circular hut built entirely from organic materials like reed, thatch, and wood, with no modern cement or steel. The site serves not only as a mausoleum for four Buganda kings but also as a vital center for religious and cultural practices.

Cultural Note: Photography inside the main mausoleum is strictly prohibited out of respect for its sacred nature.

Transfer to Lubiri (Mengo Hill)

Short drive to the next hill Mengo the seat of the Buganda Kingdom.

Lubiri (Kabaka's Palace) & the Underground Chambers

Explore the official palace of the Kabaka (King), built in 1885 during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II. This is a living symbol of Buganda's cultural identity, perched majestically on Mengo Hill. The highlight (and most sobering part) of the visit is descending into the underground torture chambers. Built during the brutal regime of Idi Amin in the 1970s, these narrow concrete tunnels were used as detention and execution sites for political prisoners. The walls still bear the chilling markings of prisoners who tried to scratch messages of desperation—a powerful testament to Uganda's resilience.

Your guide can recommend a local restaurant for a traditional Ugandan meal (e.g., Luwombo—steamed stew cooked in banana leaves) or a quick snack en route.

Rubaga Cathedral (St. Mary's Cathedral Rubaga)

Perched on Lubaga Hill, this is the largest Catholic cathedral in Uganda and the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala. Completed in 1914, its interior boasts magnificent stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes alongside Ugandan saints and martyrs. The cathedral also houses relics of the Uganda Martyrs. Historically, Lubaga Hill was once the seat of the Buganda kings before becoming a religious center.

Transfer to Namirembe Hill

A very short drive between the Catholic and Anglican hills—you can actually see one hill from the other.

Namirembe Cathedral (St. Paul's Cathedral Namirembe)

Visit the oldest cathedral in Uganda and the spiritual headquarters of the Anglican Church of Uganda. Its name, Namirembe, means "peace" in Luganda. The current brick Gothic Revival structure features tall spires and stained glass windows. The cathedral houses graves of early missionaries and offers a commanding view of Kampala.

Transfer to Kikaya Hill

Bahá'í Temple (Mother Temple of Africa)

Perched on Kikaya Hill, this architectural gem is the only Bahá'í House of Worship in Africa. Built between 1958 and 1961, its dome reaches 124 feet (37 meters) high and is adorned with mosaic tiles from Italy and roof tiles from Belgium. The temple's nine-sided structure symbolizes the inclusivity of all world religions. Surrounding it are 52 acres of serene gardens, offering a peaceful place for reflection.

Opening Hours: Open daily (closed Mondays). Sunday service at 10:30 AM.

Late Afternoon: Namugongo (The Martyrs' Shrine)

Transfer to Namugongo

A longer drive (approx. 30 minutes) east of Kampala to the most important pilgrimage site in Uganda.

Namugongo Martyrs' Shrine

Visit the site where 45 Catholic and Anglican martyrs were executed between 1885 and 1887 by Kabaka Mwanga for their faith. Today, it is one of Africa's most significant religious sites. You will have the option to visit either or both:

• The Catholic Shrine: A modern basilica built in a striking architectural style, designed to look like a traditional Ganda hut. It stands on the spot where the Catholic martyrs, including St. Charles Lwanga, were burned alive.
• The Anglican Shrine: Located nearby, this marks the site of the Anglican martyrs' execution.

Every year on June 3rd, hundreds of thousands (sometimes over one million) of pilgrims walk to Namugongo to seek forgiveness, healing, and spiritual renewal. The site stands as a powerful reminder of faith and sacrifice.
