What makes this tour special
Itinerary
Early start from Isfahan for the long drive south-west across the Zagros to the warm foothills on the Khuzestan side, about 5–7 hours depending on where the family is camped. You meet your Bakhtiari host family at their winter camp (roughly 800–1,200 m) as they pack up for the spring kooch, which usually runs April to May. Short walk out to the grazing grounds, then dinner in the black tent. Overnight: Nomad tent.
Up before dawn to strike camp and load the mules, then you walk uphill with the herds along the il-rah, the migration trail. Expect about 5–6 hours on foot (roughly 12–18 km) on rough stony tracks, climbing steadily. The family sets the pace and picks the next campsite. Overnight: Nomad tent.
The big river ford with the flocks. In spring the rivers run high with snowmelt, so the family times the crossing and our guide decides where and how guests cross safely. About 4–5 hours of walking, then a slower afternoon in camp: bread-baking, dairy-making, dugh and stories around the fire. Overnight: Nomad tent.
The hardest day. You climb a Zagros pass with the shepherds and mule trains on steep, loose paths, topping out at roughly 2,500–3,000 m. Count on 6–8 hours on foot with breaks, then help raise the tents at dusk in a new camp. Nights up here can drop close to freezing. Overnight: Nomad tent.
A shorter walk, about 3–4 hours, down into the green summer pastures of Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari (around 2,000–2,400 m), where the herds will spend the summer. Farewell feast with the family, then a short drive to a village guesthouse and a hot shower. Overnight: Guesthouse.
Road back to Isfahan, about 3–4 hours; the evening is yours in the city. Overnight: Isfahan.

Season: the spring kooch runs roughly April to May. The exact days depend on the weather, the snowmelt and the family, so every departure is on request and the dates are confirmed with you closer to the time.
Fitness: 3–8 hours of walking a day on rough mountain tracks, with one long pass day at roughly 2,500–3,000 m. You should be fit and used to hiking several days in a row.
Altitude and weather: from about 800 m in the foothills up to roughly 3,000 m on the passes. Days are usually 20–25°C; nights can fall to 5°C, and close to freezing on the passes.
Camp facilities: you sleep in the family's black goat-hair tent or a guest tent next to it, on carpets with blankets and pillows. Bring a warm sleeping bag. There are no toilets or showers on the trail: you use a bush toilet and wash in streams or with a bowl of warm water. The Day 5 guesthouse and the Isfahan hotel have hot showers.
Luggage: mules carry the camp loads, so you walk with a daypack (water, layers, sun protection). Bring one soft bag and keep it light.
The route, campsites and timings follow the family and the herds, and can change on the day.
