The Minaret That Survived Genghis Khan
The Kalyan Minaret, close to 47 meters tall and built in 1127, is said to have impressed Genghis Khan enough that he spared it when his army destroyed much of the rest of the city in 1220. It still marks the skyline above the Kalyan Mosque and its matching madrasa across the square.
Around Lyab-i Hauz
The pool at Lyab-i Hauz, shaded by centuries-old mulberry trees, has served as a public gathering spot since the 17th century and remains the most relaxed corner of the old city for tea or a meal between sightseeing stops. The Ark, a fortified royal citadel on the western edge of the center, held Bukhara's emirs until the 1920s.
