Fewer than half a square kilometer, Vatican City packs one of the densest concentrations of art and history anywhere in Europe. A visit typically starts at the Vatican Museums and ends under Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, then continues into St Peter's Basilica, the largest church in Christendom.

Getting Inside Without the Wait

Midday queues at the Museums entrance can stretch for an hour or more, so early morning and late afternoon slots move faster. A dress code applies throughout the Basilica: shoulders and knees covered, no exceptions, even in August heat.

Beyond the Sistine Chapel

The Vatican Gardens cover roughly half the territory and are seen only by guided cart or walking tour. Underneath the Basilica, the Necropolis and St Peter's tomb require separate advance booking. On Wednesdays, weather permitting, the Pope holds a general audience in St Peter's Square that is open to visitors at no cost.
