Bozcaada Castle

The exact date and the person who built Bozcaada Castle remain unknown. It was reconstructed by Fatih Sultan Mehmet, and underwent significant repairs after the Venetians relinquished the island in 1657. During the reign of Mahmut II, the castle was almost completely reconstructed in 1815, as revealed by inscriptions. The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism performed the last restoration in 1996. The castle is divided into two parts: the outer fort, which is now vacant and contains the arsenal, bastion, training grounds, and basic remnants of houses, and the inner castle. The entrance section is in the east of the inner castle and has two gates, as well as an infirmary, mosque, minaret, dungeons, and barracks. In the center, there is a supply depot, arsenal, and cistern. The castle now has an exhibit space displaying historical and ethnographic works associated with Bozcaada.
