The Faroes are a self-governing part of Denmark made up of eighteen islands, most linked by tunnels or short ferry hops, so island-hopping rarely eats up a whole day. Streymoy and Eysturoy, the two largest, hold most of the population and the capital, Torshavn, a compact harbor town of turf-roofed government buildings.
