The rock towers of Meteora began as hermit caves and became a monastic republic in the fourteenth century, when monks hauled building stone up the cliffs by rope and windlass. Today paved roads and stone steps reach all six working monasteries, so a single day covers the highlights without a scramble.

Planning a Day Among the Monasteries

Most tours in Meteora start from Kalambaka or the village of Kastraki and visit two or three monasteries, typically Great Meteoron, Varlaam and the photogenic Roussanou. Each keeps its own closing day, which is why guided itineraries shuffle the order midweek. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and wrap skirts are lent at the door.

Seasons and Light

Spring and fall bring clear air and comfortable walking temperatures, while winter dustings of snow turn the pillars monochrome. Photographers stay for the final hour before dusk, when the rock glows red above the Pineios valley.
