Ohrid's Old Town, Stone by Stone
Tours of Ohrid climb from the harbor through cobbled lanes to the Church of St. Sophia, whose 11th-century frescoes rank among the finest in the Balkans, then continue up to Samuel's Fortress for a full sweep of the lake. On the way down, the ancient theatre still stages performances during the Ohrid Summer Festival in July and August.
Out on the Lake
Lake Ohrid is one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, home to fish and snails found nowhere else. Boat trips run to the Bay of Bones, a reconstructed prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement, and on to the monastery of Sveti Naum near the Albanian border, where underwater springs feed the lake through clear pools.
Timing Your Visit
June and September bring swimmable water without peak crowds. Winter is quiet but atmospheric, with fresh snow on the Galicica ridge that separates Ohrid from Lake Prespa.
