Rowing Out to the Island Church

Getting to Bled's island still means a ride in a traditional pletna boat, rowed by hand, followed by a climb up 99 stone steps to the Church of the Assumption. Local tradition holds that a groom should carry his bride up all 99 without stopping, a custom most visitors are happy to just watch.

A Cake Worth the Detour

Bled's signature kremna rezina, a custard and cream slice served at cafes around the lake, has near-mythical status among visitors to Slovenia and is worth the calories after a walk around the shore. Portions are generous enough to split.

Quieter Water Nearby

Lake Bohinj, larger and less visited than Bled, sits a short drive further into Triglav National Park and suits travelers looking for the same alpine scenery without the crowds. Vintgar Gorge, with its wooden walkways over turquoise rapids, fits neatly between the two.
